We’ve always known that the PlayStation 5 won’t play PS3, PS2, and PS1 games – but apparently some needed to spell it out for them. So there you have it: the PS5 will not play PS3, PS2 and PS1 games.
The confirmation comes from an interview with Sony chief Jim Ryan which was conducted by the Japanese bible Famitsu. When asked directly about legacy backward compatibility, the executive reiterated that the company’s next-gen console will play 99% of PS4 titles, but that it “couldn’t achieve the implementation” of backward compatibility for its older home consoles. .
Presumably, the PS2 Classics that have been ported to PS4 will work, just like remasters like PaRappa the Rapper, you just won’t be able to dust your PS1 collection out of the attic and play it on your PS5. Which, frankly, isn’t really surprising, is it? After all, Ubisoft told us this weeks ago.
